Hip Hop like all great things had its period of “the dark ages”… there was a time during the early 2000’s when it seemed the Hip Hop would forever be stuck in the phase of Crunk Music and Radio friendly songs. However as of recent there seems to have been a reemergence in lyrics from the new rappers such as J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar to the return of the great Nas with his new album “Life is Good”. I personally attribute this to the mix tape game, for years music that was exposed to the masses where determined by money hungry label executives who obviously didn’t give two fucks about anything other than sales. Young hungry artist choose to turn to the internet to gain exposure and it ultimately paid off with the explosion of Drake’s (the Harriet Tubman of underground music) “So far gone” mix tape, after that it seems as if an endless amount of young talent began to pour out by the dozens. The mix tape grind gave hip hop music stars such as Drake, J. Cole, Kid Cudi, Wale, Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, Big Sean and Big K.R.I.T., all of these artist have entered the main stream and released albums. However the list of new talent has not slowed down there are a countless amount of young talent who have gained exposure to a mainstream audience but have not released albums such as Meek Mills, A$ap Rocky, Kendrick Lamar, French Montana, Joey Bada$$, Vado, Angel Haze, Troy Ave, Skyzoo, Smoke Dza, Action Bronson, and Stalley. So it’s only right that while we give an ode to the mix tape that we tell you which we think is our top 5 and don’t be afraid to reply and tell us what u think?
